evaluation

According to the methodology and the activities designed, this teaching unit will carry out a continuous, mixed and criterial evaluation because the evaluation will be carried out through the whole teaching-learning process, from the beginning to the end. On one hand, the teacher is going to evaluate the whole evolution and the final product, and on the other hand, the students are going to make a self-evaluation and co-evaluation at the end of the work. Besides, they, along with other teachers and guests are going to evaluate the service offered to the community too. For these reasons, the evaluation will be mixed. In the whole process, the students’ progress in his/her results will be compared with a previously stated criterion.

TECHNIQUES AND INSTRUMENTS

The techniques and instruments we will use in order to evaluate the work of the students during the project are:

1. IDEA EXCHANGE

This technique allows the teacher to gather information about students’ previous knowledge, skills and attitudes by means of the exchange of ideas.

  • Brainstorming: It is a group working tool that encourages the emergence of new ideas on a specific topic and allows us to connect with the students' previous knowledge.

2.  TECHNIQUES BASED ON INFORMATION

  • Self-evaluation report: This report will help the teacher to contrast and complete the information collected with other evaluation techniques. Throughout the project, the students will use their Field Notebook in which they will collect important data from the field trip, they will have to answer the questions that are presented to them as well as reflect on what they have learned. Once the project is finished, they will deliver it to the teacher.

  • Coevaluation report: It consists of the evaluation of a student’s performance through the observation and determinations of their own study peers. For this purpose, each team will be provided with a bullseye template for each component of the group. The students adopt the role of teacher and evaluate the knowledge and actions acquired by a colleague and that they have also had to learn in a timely manner.

  • Kahoot: The teacher will be able to know what was learned during all the previous sessions through a questionnaire of nine questions related to the work. Thus, the teacher will be able to evaluate the registered data of each student.

3.  DIRECT SYSTEMATIC OBSERVATION

This is a process which implies paying attention to a specific student’s action to establish to what extent it fits previously fixed evaluation criteria.

  • Control and collating lists: These cards contain planned observations of possible knowledge, procedure or behaviour. The observer just records YES or NO according to whether this behaviour appears or not. We will use individual card models as well as group ones in order to evaluate the whole process of the project.

  • Colloquium about sensations: In the last session, the students will hold a discussion about their feelings about the project and about the extracurricular outing. These observations will be very useful for the teacher when evaluating the project in a global and utilitarian way. It is a resource to assess the extent to which service learning has been favorable for their comprehensive personal training.

4.  TRIANGULATION

It consists of collecting observations about a situation from three different points of view in order to compare them. The triangulation will be carried out in two different activities.

  • On the one hand, at the end of session 10, each group will share a link that will take attendees to a Google questionnaire where they can evaluate the final products, which will make it easier for the teacher to use it as an evaluation rubric. The Google questionnaire will allow us to obtain quantitative information, through graphics, as well as qualitative information, open to public opinion. In this way, the evaluation will be carried out by the representative members of the town, the assistants and the teacher.

  • On the other hand, in the closing session of the project, each attendee will be given a form that they will have to fill in evaluating said activity and that the teacher will use as an evaluation rubric. Therefore, the teacher will take into account the evaluation carried out by the attendees, dividing them into three groups (families, city hall staff, school students from other courses).

In order to evaluate the project, we will follow a percentage scale based on 3 fields:

  • Individual work (30%): Field Notebook , Kahoot, Control and collating lists

  • Group work (50%) : Bullseye, Google Questionnaire  and evaluation rubric.

  • Attitudinal work (20%) : Colloquium about sensations and control and collating lists.

We also believe it is appropriate to develop models that quantitatively value the trends and dispositions of teachers, with the aim of identifying their strengths and weaknesses and orienting teachers towards improvement. This evaluation will be carried out by the Technique based on information, using a Self-evaluation.According to Abbott and Perkins (1978), the most recurrent variables have focused on organization, planning, teaching methodology, teacher attitudes and interactions with pupils.
