Procreate

Hi! Welcome to another article in which we talk about a tool we will use in our Didactic Unit. Today we will be talking about Procreate. Are you interested? If so, follow this article to know more!

What is Procreate?

Procreate is an app developed in 2011, at the beginning available only for iPads, but thanks to the users' prayers is now available in diverse iOS devices. Procreate has become one of the hallmarks of the digital art world, as they define it in the Procreate official website "the artists favorite tool". This app is really intuitive so it is good for begginers as well as for experts, so even kids can use it. An Apple Pencil is needed to use it in the iPad.

What's up with Procreate? Why does it have that importance in the digital art world?

Well, along the years, Savage Interactive, the bussiness which created it, has developed new features that make much more easier to draw. One of the strogest features is it wide range of brushes and textures, they go from the most basic brush to some brushes you could not imagine to draw with in the digital world, not to mention that personalization is available for these brushes and textures. The artist can even create their own brush, literally, from zero.

It has many different features, such as layers or timelapse. Timelapse is one of the most used resources by artists, and if you do not know what I am talking about, let me explain.

Timelapse

When you are creating in Procreate, the app stores everything you do as a compilation of every step you take. Artists usually share their work by showing these Timelapses, so the audience can watch their way of creating and learn from this; other people just enjoy watching the proccess of the creation of a masterpiece from their favourite artist.

Layers.

Layers are that tool every drawing app has. It lets you combine and use different planes to create your work. For example if you create a drawing, it has a lineart, and creating another layer lets you color it without going out of the line.

Colors, animations and much more...

Procreate has a wide range of colors, every color you can think of is available. Not only this but you can select any color from the image you are using as reference or your own work so you do not have to be selecting new colors from time to time.

Small animations can be designed by the animation tool included in Procreate. Later we will let some links so you can see some examples of this wonderful app.

It is easy to conclude why this app is the favourite for artists, illustrators, designers, no matter if they are begginers or experts. Once you try it, you won't leave it.

Procreate in Primary Education

As I said before, this is a very intuitive tool almost anyone can use, so it is not unusual to try to teach kids to use it. Always have in mind to let them explore and have fun so they see this instrument as something positive. I have not found any article mentioning the benefits of Procreate or any digital drawing tool in Primary Education, however we know the numerous benefits of ICTs, so if I am allowed, in my personal opinion, art has many advantages in any person, to explore your creativity, to find mental peace, to share your thoughts... So I think it is the same for kids, including the fun only they are able to find in everything.

Some testimonials say using Zentangle method to teach kids who are not fans of art or drawing, so students can meditate while drawing. The creators say that almost anyone can create something beautiful through this method.

What is Zentangle?

From the official website of Zentangle, it is deffined as

The Zentangle Method is an easy-to-learn, relaxing, and fun way to create beautiful images by drawing structured patterns. We call these patterns, tangles. You create tangles with combinations of dots, lines, simple curves, S-curves and orbs. These simple shapes are the "Elemental Strokes" in all Zentangle art. These patterns are drawn on small pieces of paper called "tiles." We call them tiles because you can assemble them into mosaics.
Zentangle art is non-representational and unplanned so you can focus on each stroke and not worry about the result. There is no up or down to Zentangle art. If fact, you can most easily create Zentangle art by rotating your tile as you tangle -- always keeping your hand in a relaxed position. You don't need to know what a tangle is going to look like to draw it. You just need to know the steps. The result is a delightful surprise.
As you use the Zentangle Method to create beautiful images, you likely will enjoy increased focus, creativity, self-confidence and an increased sense well-being.

Procreate has its own community called Procreate Folio. Here another Primary Education teacher asked for some advise when teaching digital art with iPads for 2-4th graders. I leave the link here so you can take a look for more deep knowledge from experts.

Procreate for teacher (2020)

Apple and Procreate decided to give a special space for teachers, probably because they have realized a good percentage of users are teachers who are always trying to bring new content to the classroom. They will be including some educational tools and resources, to let kids express themselves, and have developed as well a suite of Lesson Ideas to help teachers fire up their kids imaginations and kick off our Learn with Procreate initiative.

Procreate says these affirmations in their official website:

Ranging from simple drawing lessons that explore the unique beauty of snowflakes to more advanced animation lessons demonstrating the physics of motion, these Lesson Ideas are tailored made to make learning with Procreate easy and fun. With an emphasis on flexible Lesson Ideas, rather than strict lesson plans — these are flexible enough to provide a creative framework of easy to learn Procreate skills that can be applied to all sorts of subject matter. How you apply them is only limited by your imagination.
These Lesson Ideas are designed to be fun first and foremost.. It’s been proven time and again creative learning engages young minds and helps make lessons stick. Best of all it gives kids the ability to express themselves through their work while they learn. Working digitally means missteps are never permanent, giving kids permission to be confident in making mistakes and liberating them to experiment like never before. It’s this freedom that will hopefully help educators empower the next generation of creators to find their voice, express their ideas and tell stories unique to them.
