QR code

What is a QR?

A QR Code is a two-dimensional barcode that is readable by smartphones. QR is short for Quick Response (they can be read quickly by a cell phone). They are used to take a piece of information from a transitory media and put it in to your cell phone.

Once it is in your cell phone, it may give you details about that business (allowing users to search for nearby locations), or details about the person wearing the t-shirt, show you a URL which you can click to see a trailer for a movie, or it may give you a coupon which you can use in a local outlet.

The reason why they are more useful than a standard barcode is that they can store (and digitally present) much more data, including url links, geo coordinates, and text. The other key feature of QR Codes is that instead of requiring a chunky hand-held scanner to scan them, many modern cell phones can scan them.

How does a cell phone read a QR code?

Recent phones are able to read them without any additional app but using the camera itself; nevertheless for the rest of phones multiple options do exisit, for example Kaywa, Barcode Scanner or i-nigma for iOS devices.

How are QR codes generated?

Nowadays diverse websites are available for creating QR codes in a very simplistic way, for example the same website we have mentioned earlier, Kaywa, lets you create your own QR, inserting the link or data you want your QR to have.

As we have mentioned in another article, Vanesa suggested us to use QR Codes for linking tests or any other materials linked to our project.

How are QR used in Primary Education?

Book reviews, multimedia content, on school equipment, solutions and tutorials, ... Infinite possibilities are linked to the QR use in a classroom. Nowadays' situation is a good example, for dinamizing the classes you can create a route by surfin the internet, following the hints that your QR leave (checkpoints). Studnets know better than anyone how these work, so it will give them a feeling of security and success in what they are doing. Problem-solving skills will improve as well. Since everything as been already thought of, websites for this treasure hunts already exist.

The math class won't be only you explaining using a board, but students can scan QR codes and go to different pages with activities, videos, notes...

We will keep posting about resources for our Didactic Unit!
